I’m Barrett Long, a product-focused software engineer and architect based in Edmonton. My background is somewhat unusual. I studied fine art and digital media, began professionally in design and web development, and gradually moved into full-stack engineering, mobile development, platform architecture, and engineering management. That path taught me to look at software from several directions at once. I care about how a product feels to use, how its parts fit together, how it performs as it grows, and whether another developer can understand it six months later.
Since 2017, my primary work was COM•MU•NI•KIT, a community communications platform that grew from a single deployment into a SaaS product serving more than 260 communities across Canada and the United States. I built significant portions of the original product, led its complete redesign, helped grow its engineering team, and remained involved in both product and technical decisions throughout its evolution.
I’m now looking for opportunities where I can contribute at that same intersection of product, architecture, engineering, and user experience.

Adobe Photoshop CC is the industry standard at this point. There is really no arguing that. So, I figured it was time that someone sat down and wrote out a list of like ten things that they find super cool about Photoshop. That is a pretty novel idea... Right!

The making of Studio Birdcage Part 1: So many false starts
- 2018-10-06

In part one of the thrilling development story of this very website I reminisce about all the false starts. It is a gripping tale of one mans struggle with a design that is not working, an overly ambitious plan and a voice in his head that will simply not shut up. Doesn't that sound like something that is worth a read.

The Making of Studio Birdcage Part 2: Building a Backend
- 2018-10-06

Content Management Systems are the bee's knees. That being said, I have never found one that I felt I truly enjoyed using. So when I started planning the build for Studio Birdcage, the solution was obvious. Why not build your own. I mean how hard can it be!
